India launches BIO-NIVESH platform to connect biotech startups with investors

India has launched BIO-NIVESH, a new strategic platform of the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) aimed at strengthening connections between promising biotechnology startups and the investment community.

The platform was launched by Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, with the inaugural edition bringing together more than 20 startups and over 50 investors under one roof.

BIO-NIVESH has been conceived as a bridge between India's growing biotechnology innovation ecosystem and the capital required to take promising technologies from development to commercial scale. The initiative seeks to facilitate investor-startup engagement, foster partnerships and accelerate the journey of biotechnology innovations from potential to impact.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Dr Singh said the interaction generated a mutually enriching synergy, with young startups presenting practical suggestions and challenges while leading investors shared their expectations and perspectives.

The platform assumes significance as India's biotechnology ecosystem continues to expand, with startups increasingly playing a role in translating scientific research into commercially viable solutions across healthcare, agriculture, industrial biotechnology and other emerging areas.

By bringing innovators and investors into a focused engagement platform, BIO-NIVESH is expected to help startups better understand investment expectations while giving investors greater visibility into emerging technologies and entrepreneurial opportunities within India's biotechnology landscape.

The initiative also strengthens the efforts of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and BIRAC to build an enabling ecosystem around biotechnology entrepreneurship, commercialisation and scale-up.

With its inaugural edition, BIO-NIVESH establishes a new interface between science, entrepreneurship and capital, with the larger objective of ensuring that promising Indian biotech innovations can move faster from laboratories and startup ecosystems towards scalable real-world impact.
